WHAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED SO FAR

COTTON MADE IN AFRICA

Cotton made in Africa is an internationally recognised standard for sustainably produced cotton from Africa. CmiA supports African cotton farmers and their families, and promotes environmentally friendly cotton farming. By activating market forces, they are contributing significantly to economic independence. HAKRO is part of the network of companies that purchase Cotton made in Africa (CmiA) certified cotton and support agricultural training, environmentally-friendly growing methods, and social projects with their licences charges.

GOTS-CERTIFIED

The Global Organic Textile Standard, GOTS for short, is one of the most discerning seals for the processing of textiles made from organically grown natural fibres. Retailers who wish to sell products under this standard need to be audited. Which we did, with success, in 2017.

FIRST ORGANIC COLLECTION LINE

For those who care about controlled cultivation of raw materials, we have offered an entire collection in organic cotton since 2017. The models are all certified to GOTS, the leading international standard for the environmentally and socially acceptable production of textiles made from organically grown natural fibres: GOTS label to CERES-0388.

OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100

The sign of "Textile trust" represents the OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100. This is an independent test and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products. The testing for harmful substances includes substances that are banned or regulated and substances that are known to be harmful to health. Every item of HAKRO clothing bears this quality sign.

INTERNATIONAL ACCORD

"International Accord" was established after the collapse of the Rana Plaza textiles factory in 2013 aiming to prevent such tragedy from ever occurring again. The agreement between trades unions and global textile companies ensures that fire prevention measures and safety standards are observed in Bangladesh. We supported this important measure by signing the first "International Accord" in 2015 and renewing our agreement in 2018.

GREEN BUTTON

Since 2020, we are selling products that have been certified with the Green Button. As the first government-run certification label for sustainable textiles, the Green Button has been reviewing companies and products using a comprehensive catalogue of sustainability criteria since the end of 2019 and acts as a meta-label. Our GOTS-certified Organic collection line bears the Green Button label.

We want a product that appeals through its excellent quality, durability and responsible manufacture and yet is available to purchase at a transparent price.

WHAT WE'RE STILL WORKING ON

INCREASING THE ORGANIC COTTON CONTENT

By 2022, we want to have increased the proportion of sustainably produced cotton, based on our total cotton purchase, to up to 50 percent.

DEVELOPING ALTERNATIVE FIBRES

We already cover 24% of our cotton needs with sustainable or organic fibres such as Cotton made in Africa or GOTS. By 2022, we want to increase this share to up to 50% - as well as source 100% certified sustainable merino wool according to the Responsible Wool Standard.

REDUCING RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS

We want to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions along the textile supply chain. By 2022 we want to save 30% of emissions. We also want to reduce our demand for non-recycled packaging material by 50% by 2022 to save valuable resources.
